Sewing machines can be purchased new or used. They are available in
basic utilitarian styles or computerized models. Basic sewing
machine models serve very well for home decor sewing and making basic
clothing items. Most sewing for home decorating projects requires
only straight or zigzag stitching, and perhaps a regular stitch, zigzag
stitch, or zipper foot attachment. Look for a machine that can make
buttonholes as well. For sewing fancier clothes or fabrics that
require stretch stitches or special edge finishings, choose a computerized
machine with multiple stitches and extra presser feet.
Buying a used sewing machine can save you money, but it can be
risky. Sewing machines are precision devices, but they are fairly
heavy. If they are not packed carefully for shipment, they can be
damaged. However, you may get a better machine for less if someone
is upgrading to a newer model.
Whatever type of sewing machine you choose, read the machine's user manual
and familiarize yourself with all its features. Practice threading
the machine, setting the stitch length, winding the bobbin, and sewing
different stitches on small pieces of fabric.
